Beautiful in direction and style. Layered. Would love to discuss it. But I don’t think I liked it. I’m trying to see past the brutal rape scenes, but the attempts to make me empathize with ‘Alex’ was absurd. I guess the question is whether totalitarianism and violation of humanity still bother us when imposed upon a completely disgusting and vile human being, despite his charisma. I don’t really know how I feel. To a certain extent, ‘Alex’ raped society and other individuals so grotesquely that his punishment truly did seem to be in line with an ‘eye for an eye’ punishment. He took a life, so the government took his. And his former victim also attempted to take his life. Is it injustice if he can’t make that decision? Am I unjust to think he had it coming? Maybe that’s barbaric thinking, but he traumatized heaps of people. And of course, I’m particularly sensitive to rape. It’s hard for me to even justify seeing it on the screen like that. I can’t make up my mind. I do think that counts for something - that I’m still considering the film.

realistically magical. the deathly consequences of corruption, undying love, and selfishness - all spiraling out of control in the self contained world of ‘the pines.’ to call this a crime drama would be an insult. it’s so much more than that.

needless to say, i was blown away.
